REVIEW: Waldo's Gift - Malcolm's Law

Ben Blissett

What can be said about this fantastic debut LP from Waldo’s Gift… It’s riveting, exciting, unique, downright impressive and that’s not even the half of it.

This album is not quite like anything we've heard before, instantly slapping the listener across the face with the complex and intense riffs of ‘Candifloss’. This song is so gorgeously mixed for a debut album, and it's astonishing how well the bass, the guitar and the drums were so sonically intertwined with each other in such a kinetic manner. The entire release manages to take experimental jazz to the next level, combining it with a myriad of influences and genres, and creating something closer to post punk.

It's nigh impossible not to absolutely adore the motions this album goes through - the intensity of the opener continues into the title track, which blends all this instrumentation for another punch to the throat, all the while showcasing the incredible synchronicity of this Bristolian trio. A few tracks in however, you're met with a bit of a surprise, as these three wild musicians dial it back and take the LP in quite a different direction. With some much less intense, almost laid back tunes, Waldo's Gift really sell the rest of their sound and take us back to their root, inadvertently fleshing out the sonic profile of the album as a whole in the process.

If you like intense guitar riffs with crazy pinch harmonics and shreds that are able to showcase the sheer talent of their player, if you like bass that will make your subwoofer cause an earthquake, and if you like drums that are completely unique and would be a nasty day at the office for any other drummer to replicate, this LP will have you sorted.

'Malcolm's Law' will be released on January 22nd.
